Keeping your dentures fitting well
Denture Care
Cleaning, maintenance, and relines to keep your fit perfect.
Dentures need care, just like natural teeth. With the right routine and regular checkups, they should fit well and last years.
Daily care
Brush dentures gently with a denture brush and mild soap or denture cleaner — not regular toothpaste, which is too abrasive. Soak overnight in clean water or a denture solution. Rinse before putting them back in.
When to come in
If your dentures feel loose, click, or cause sore spots, come see us — most issues are fixed with a quick reline or adjustment. We also examine your gums and remaining teeth at every visit.
Common Questions
Frequently asked
How often should I clean my dentures?
Twice a day, minimum. Brush them gently with a soft denture brush and mild soap or denture cleaner after meals. Soak overnight in clean water or a denture solution. Rinse before putting them back in.
Can I use regular toothpaste on dentures?
No — regular toothpaste is too abrasive and will scratch the surface, creating spots where stains and bacteria collect. Use a denture-specific cleaner or mild dish soap, never whitening toothpaste or any product with bleach.
Why do my dentures feel loose now when they used to fit?
Your gums and jawbone change shape over time, especially in the first year after extractions. Loose dentures usually mean it's time for a reline — a quick in-office adjustment that re-adapts the inside of the denture to your current gum shape. Don't use over-the-counter denture adhesives long-term to compensate; come in for a real fix.
How often do dentures need to be replaced?
A well-made denture typically lasts 5 to 7 years before the teeth wear down enough that replacement makes sense. The denture base itself may need a reline at the 2- to 3-year mark to keep the fit comfortable as your gums change.
Should I sleep with my dentures in?
Generally no — your gums need a break and exposure to saliva overnight. Sleeping with dentures in is linked to higher rates of gum inflammation and yeast infection. Soak them in clean water or denture solution overnight in a covered container.
What if my denture gets a sore spot?
Don't tough it out. Sore spots usually mean the denture is pressing too hard in one area — a quick adjustment in our office takes 10 minutes and prevents the sore from becoming an ulcer. Call us at 540-489-8191.
