Custom porcelain shells

Porcelain Veneers

Thin custom porcelain shells that transform smiles — beautifully and conservatively, designed around your face.

Porcelain veneers are the gold standard of cosmetic dentistry. Done well, they look like the teeth you wish you’d been born with — not like “work.” Done poorly, they look obvious. The difference is design and craftsmanship, and those are what Dr. Campbell brings to every veneer case at our Rocky Mount office.

What porcelain veneers actually are

Porcelain veneers are thin custom shells — about the thickness of a fingernail — that bond to the front surface of your teeth. The porcelain is layered, polished, and shaped to match the size, color, and shape we’ve designed for your specific smile. From a foot away, well-placed veneers are indistinguishable from natural teeth. From a conversational distance, they look like the teeth you wish you’d been born with.

Veneers are the gold standard of cosmetic dentistry because porcelain reflects light almost exactly the way natural enamel does. They don’t darken with age. They don’t stain from coffee, tea, or wine. Done well, they look like nothing was ever done — and they last 15 to 20 years before they need replacement.

What veneers can fix

  • Permanent discolorationthat whitening can’t reach — tetracycline staining, dead nerves, internal stains, old failing restorations
  • Chipped, fractured, or worn edges on front teeth
  • Gaps and spacingbetween teeth that you’d rather close than orthodontically move
  • Mild crowding where your teeth are basically straight but a few sit slightly forward or twisted — veneers can mask it without months of Invisalign
  • Worn or short teeth from years of grinding, restoring proper length and proportion to your smile
  • Tooth shape irregularities — peg laterals, oddly small teeth, teeth that look pointy or off-balance
  • Overall smile redesign — when you want a comprehensive change to shade, shape, length, and proportion across the front 6, 8, or 10 teeth at once

How we design your veneers

A bad veneer case looks obvious — too white, too square, too uniform, too prominent for the face. A good veneer case looks like you, only better. Getting there takes design, not just dentistry.

  1. Smile consultation. What do you like about your smile? What do you want to change? Bring photos of smiles you admire — celebrities, friends, your younger self. Dr. Campbell photographs your face from multiple angles and we talk through goals.
  2. Digital design preview. We mock up your projected result on a digital model so you can see — and adjust — the shape, length, and proportion before we touch a tooth.
  3. Shade selection. Choosing porcelain shade and translucency is the most overlooked step in cosmetic dentistry. We pick shades that complement your skin tone, eye color, and the surrounding teeth — not the brightest white we can find.
  4. Trial smile. Before final prep, we can place a temporary mockup directly on your teeth so you (and your family) can see and live with the design for a few hours.

The procedure — typically two visits

A full veneer case takes about three weeks from prep to final placement, in two visits:

  1. Visit 1: Prep + impressions.Local anesthesia keeps you completely comfortable. We remove a very thin layer of enamel from the front of each tooth (about 0.5 mm — about the thickness of the veneer that will replace it). We take a digital impression, design the case with our ceramist, and fit you with custom temporaries you’ll wear for about three weeks while the final veneers are crafted. Most patients leave looking better with the temporaries than they did before.
  2. Visit 2: Try-in and bond. Two to three weeks later, your custom porcelain veneers arrive. We try them on first — without bonding — so you can confirm shade, shape, and proportion. Once you’re happy, we bond each veneer to the tooth using a precise multi-step adhesive process. The bond is permanent and very strong.

Cost — what to expect

Custom porcelain veneers at Rocky Mount Family Dentistry typically run:

  • Per tooth: typically $1,200–$2,000
  • Top 6 teeth (most common cosmetic case): typically $7,000–$12,000
  • Top 8–10 teeth (full smile design): typically $10,000–$20,000

The variation comes down to case complexity, how much shape redesign is involved, and how many teeth you choose to do. Cosmetic dentistry is almost never covered by dental insurance — but CareCredit financing spreads the cost across 12 to 24 monthly payments, often at 0% interest on qualifying plans. Virginia Dental Club members get a 20% discount on cosmetic treatment.

Quality matters more than price here. A bargain veneer case from a discount dental chain often has to be redone within 5 years; well-designed veneers from an experienced dentist usually last 15 to 20 years.

Living with veneers

Once your veneers are bonded, daily life looks the same. A few things to know:

  • Brush and floss normally.Veneers don’t decay (porcelain can’t), but the natural tooth underneath still can if daily brushing and flossing slip.
  • Avoid biting hard objects. Pens, fingernails, ice — porcelain can chip if abused.
  • Wear a night guard if you grind. Bruxism is the #1 cause of premature veneer failure. If you grind, a custom night guard protects them.
  • Maintain your cleanings. Six-month maintenance visits catch any issues early and keep both your veneers and the natural teeth under them healthy.
  • Coffee, wine, tea welcome.Porcelain doesn’t stain the way natural enamel does — you can drink whatever you want.

Veneers vs. bonding vs. crowns

Veneers aren’t the only cosmetic option. The right call depends on what we’re fixing:

  • Cosmetic bonding — composite resin shaped directly on the tooth. Cheaper, faster, more conservative. Lifespan 5–10 years. Best for small chips, gap closure, single-tooth fixes.
  • Porcelain veneers— custom porcelain shells. More expensive, more durable (15–20 years), better long-term aesthetics. Best for full smile redesigns and cases where you want results that don’t age.
  • Porcelain crowns — full-coverage caps. Used when the tooth is too damaged for a veneer (decay below the gumline, large old fillings, after root canal). More tooth structure removed than a veneer.

We’ll honestly walk you through the trade-offs at your consultation and pick what actually fits your situation — not what generates the biggest bill.

Common Questions

Frequently asked

How long do porcelain veneers last?

Well-designed veneers commonly last 15 to 20 years. Lifespan depends on how well you care for them and whether you grind your teeth at night. Bruxism is the #1 cause of premature veneer failure — a custom night guard adds years to their life if you grind.

How much do veneers cost at Rocky Mount Family Dentistry?

Custom porcelain veneers typically run $1,200–$2,000 per tooth. A top-6 case (the most common cosmetic case) lands in the $7,000–$12,000 range. Full smile design across 8 to 10 teeth runs $10,000–$20,000. CareCredit financing and the Virginia Dental Club's 20% discount both apply.

Does insurance cover veneers?

Almost never — cosmetic dentistry isn't typically covered by dental insurance. CareCredit can spread the cost across 12 to 24 monthly payments, often at 0% interest on qualifying plans. Virginia Dental Club members get a 20% member discount on cosmetic treatment.

Will veneers ruin my real teeth?

No, when done properly. We remove only about 0.5 mm of enamel from the front of each tooth — roughly the thickness of the veneer that will replace it. The natural tooth structure underneath remains protected. The tooth has to live under porcelain forever, but it's not damaged by it.

Can I get just one veneer?

Yes — but matching a single veneer to surrounding natural teeth is genuinely difficult because porcelain reflects light slightly differently than enamel. Many patients who think they want one veneer end up choosing a few more for a uniform result. We'll honestly tell you what we think will look best.

Will my veneers look obviously fake?

Not if they're designed well. Bad veneer cases — too white, too square, too uniform, too prominent — usually come from rushed design and shade selection. We spend significant time at the consultation choosing porcelain shade and translucency that complement your skin tone, eye color, and the surrounding teeth.

Are veneers painful?

No. The prep visit uses local anesthesia and most patients feel nothing during it. Some mild gum tenderness for a day or two afterward is normal. The bonding visit is even simpler and usually doesn't require anesthesia at all.

Can I get veneers if I have crooked teeth?

Often, yes — for mild crowding, veneers can mask it without months of Invisalign. For more significant crowding, we may recommend Invisalign first to align the teeth, then veneers afterward for the final look. We'll walk through what makes sense at your consultation.
