Brighter, naturally
Professional Teeth Whitening
In-office chairside whitening and custom take-home trays — real results, gentle on sensitive teeth.
Coffee, tea, wine, time — teeth darken. Professional whitening reverses years of staining safely and predictably, with results far beyond what drugstore strips deliver. At Rocky Mount Family Dentistry, you can choose between fast in-office whitening, gradual at-home trays, or a combination — whichever fits your comfort and timeline.
What teeth whitening actually is
Teeth whitening uses a peroxide-based gel (hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide) to oxidize the stain molecules that have accumulated inside your tooth enamel over years of coffee, tea, wine, tobacco, certain medications, and simple aging. As the gel breaks down those stain molecules, your teeth lift back toward their natural shade — often several shades brighter.
Professional whitening is the same active ingredient as drugstore strips, but at much higher concentration, applied for the right amount of time, with proper protection of your gums and lips. The difference in result is dramatic. A single in-office visit typically achieves what would take 6 months of drugstore strips, with less sensitivity.
Who’s a good candidate?
Most adults with healthy teeth and gums are candidates for whitening. The treatment works best on:
- Yellow-toned staining from coffee, tea, wine, tobacco, and time. This is what whitening lifts most effectively.
- Surface staining from foods and drinks. Often dramatic results in a single visit.
- Mild age-related darkening. Enamel naturally thins with age, revealing the yellower dentin underneath. Whitening helps the enamel look brighter.
What whitening can’t do:
- Brighten crowns, veneers, fillings, or bonding. Whitening works on natural enamel only. If you have visible restorations on front teeth, we’ll plan carefully so the result is uniform.
- Treat tetracycline staining or deep internal discoloration. These require veneers, not whitening.
- Work on a dead/non-vital tooth. Internal bleaching or veneers are the right call for those cases.
Your whitening options at our office
- In-office (chairside) whitening — fastest result. About 90 minutes in our office. We isolate the gums to protect them, apply a professional-strength peroxide gel to your teeth, and activate it with light. Most patients leave 4 to 8 shades brighter the same day.
- Custom take-home tray whitening — gentler and gradual. We take digital impressions, fabricate custom-fit whitening trays in 7–10 days, and send you home with professional-strength gel. Wear the trays 30 minutes to a few hours per day for 1 to 3 weeks. Result is comparable to in-office whitening with less sensitivity.
- Combination approach — most popular. Many patients do one in-office visit for an immediate boost, then maintain with the custom trays at home. The result holds longer because you can touch up periodically.
What to expect during and after
The treatment itself is straightforward. You sit comfortably while the gel does the work. Some patients experience mild tooth sensitivity for 24 to 48 hours afterward — usually managed with sensitivity toothpaste (Sensodyne) and avoiding extreme temperatures briefly.
For the first 48 hours after in-office whitening, your enamel is more porous and more susceptible to staining. Stick to a “white diet” for the first day or two:
- Yes: water, milk, plain pasta, chicken, rice, white cheese
- No: coffee, tea, wine, tomato sauce, blueberries, soy sauce, anything that would stain a white shirt
After 48 hours, you can resume normal habits. Most patients see results that hold for 1 to 3 years before they consider a touch-up — though heavy coffee/tea drinkers and smokers see faster fading.
Cost — honest pricing
- In-office (chairside) whitening: typically $450–$650
- Custom take-home tray kit (trays + 2-week supply of gel): typically $300–$500
- Refill gel for existing trays: typically $50–$100 per touch-up cycle
Cosmetic dentistry is almost never covered by dental insurance, but CareCredit financing and the Virginia Dental Club 20% member discount both apply.
Why not just use drugstore strips?
You can — drugstore strips do work. The trade-offs:
- Lower concentration. Drugstore strips contain 6–10% hydrogen peroxide; professional whitening uses 15–40%. Multiply the time required by 4–10x to get a comparable result.
- Generic fit. One-size-fits-all strips don’t conform to your teeth precisely — gel leaks onto gums (causing irritation) and misses parts of teeth (leaving uneven shade).
- No professional oversight. If you have undiagnosed gum disease, cracked enamel, or unrestored cavities, drugstore strips can cause real harm. Professional whitening starts with an exam to confirm your teeth are healthy enough to whiten safely.
- Often results in “technicolor” smile. If you have crowns, veneers, or fillings on visible teeth, drugstore whitening lifts your natural teeth but not the restorations — leaving an obvious shade mismatch.
Whitening for special situations
Sensitive teeth: custom-tray whitening with desensitizing gel and shorter wear times typically works well even for very sensitive patients. We’ll plan around it.
Before veneers or crowns: if you’re planning cosmetic work on front teeth, whiten first so we can shade-match the restoration to your brighter natural teeth.
Pregnant or nursing: we typically recommend waiting until after pregnancy and nursing. No proven harm, but the cautious approach.
Wedding, reunion, photo session: book the whitening 1 to 2 weeks before the event so any temporary sensitivity has fully resolved.
Common Questions
Frequently asked
How much whiter will my teeth get?
Most patients lift 4 to 8 shades on a standard shade guide — which is dramatic and visible to others. Severe staining can take multiple sessions; mild staining lifts even more quickly. We'll give you an honest expectation at your consultation.
How long do whitening results last?
Results typically hold for 1 to 3 years. Heavy coffee/tea drinkers and smokers see fading sooner; patients who avoid staining foods and use occasional touch-ups can hold their result much longer. Touch-up gel for existing trays runs $50–$100 per cycle.
Will whitening hurt my teeth or enamel?
No. Professional whitening at supervised concentrations doesn't damage enamel or weaken teeth. Some patients experience temporary sensitivity (a few hours to 48 hours) which Sensodyne or a similar desensitizing toothpaste handles easily.
How much does professional whitening cost?
In-office chairside whitening runs $450–$650 for a single 90-minute session. Custom take-home tray kits run $300–$500. Both deliver comparable final results — in-office is faster, take-home is gentler. CareCredit and the Virginia Dental Club's 20% discount apply.
Will it whiten my crowns and veneers too?
No — whitening only works on natural tooth enamel. If you have visible crowns, veneers, or fillings on front teeth, we'll plan carefully so the natural teeth match the restorations (sometimes whitening before redoing old restorations to a brighter shade).
How is professional whitening better than drugstore strips?
Professional whitening uses 15–40% peroxide vs the 6–10% in drugstore strips; custom-fit trays vs generic strips that leak gel onto gums; and starts with a professional exam to confirm your teeth are healthy enough to whiten safely. One in-office visit typically equals 6 months of drugstore strips.
What about whitening toothpaste — does that work?
Whitening toothpaste removes surface stains through gentle abrasion. It doesn't actually whiten your teeth — meaning it doesn't change the underlying shade. Useful for daily maintenance, but doesn't replace professional whitening.
Can I whiten my teeth if I have dental implants or crowns?
You can whiten the natural teeth, but the restorations won't change shade. If you're planning new crowns, veneers, or implants, whiten first so we can match the new restoration to your brighter natural teeth.
